The Yardbirds – 100 Club 26-02-2010

Great gig last night. Capacity crowd trickled in at first then the venue swelled to “tightly packed” just in time for me to fight through the crowd with my guitar, but alas, not my shakers or tambourine, graciously recovered from the backstage area after the second number Please Don’t Tell Me bout The News (imagine a pub-style store room!).

Opening act Some Velvet Morning delivered a great set of soaring contemporary melodic indie rock, a fine 3 piece with a big sound.

My harmonica sounded suitably demonic through the rented Fender Bassman… what an awesome harmonically rich saturated tone!

Ben King played a blinder last night, and the crowd were loudly digging every moment… There was a guy who confessed he started crying during Smokestack Lightning, such was the enormity of the moment… Truly, that’s why we get onstage.

Talking of harmonica, I’m a huge fan of virtuoso blues harp player Alan Glen who was previousluy in The Yardbirds, and I found this tasty Buddy Whittington track on Youtube with incredibly emotion-laden solos from both Alan and Buddy – check it out
